The Effect of Light Quality and Growth Regulators on the Seed Germination of Malus prunifolia

Abstract
The effect of light quality and its interactions with various growth regulators on the dormancy and germination of Malus prunifolia seed were studied. The red light treatment promoted the seed germination, but its effect on the dormancy breaking was not so effective as the low temperature treatment did. The far-red light treatment inhibited the seed germination, the continued far-red light treatment increased the inhibitory effect on the seed germination, and the far-red light treatment for 16-hr per day had the least inhibitory effect on the germination of the excised seed. The inhibitory effect of the far-red light treatment on the seed germination was negated by 100ppm kinetin and additively by the 100ppm kinetin and 250ppm gibberellic acid (GA©ý), but not by GA©ý or indole acetic acid(IAA) alone.
